"McHale's Navy", 1962-1966, was a TV show with Tim Conway, Joe Flynn and Ernest Borgnine but later movie versions included Tom Arnold as McHale. Borgnine, after years of playing "heavies" in films and TV, got into the series that most people thought that he was miscast for and would fail in. Instead it was a four-year TV hit and spun off three movies. Set in WW-II Australia where the misfit PT-boat crew was based, the various characters both fight the Japanese navy while also engaging in bootlegging and gambling operations which constantly upset their commanding officer, played by Joe Flynn. |
